Born in India and living in Belgium for more than two decades, Manas Bharadwaj divides his life between technology and humanist documentary photography. Professionally, he helps organisations lead at the frontier of AI transformation. Photography draws him towards the enduring nature of the human experience.

Working exclusively in black and white, he photographs the world as he encounters it. His images emerge from patience, curiosity and respect, trusting that expression, gesture and light can reveal an entire life.

This exhibition began with friendship. Gez, a Ghanaian born in the United Kingdom and now living between the Netherlands and Germany, recognised a quiet depth in Manas's photographs and encouraged him to share them with a wider audience.

That friendship led to Ghana's Keta region, where the Atlantic continues its advance across the land. Fishing villages have disappeared beneath the waves. Families face displacement, uncertain livelihoods and interrupted education. Among the ruins, life persists through welcome, dignity and hope.

Thousands of kilometres away, another elemental force shapes the human story. Along the Ganges in Varanasi, life and death share the same narrow streets and riverbanks. At Manikarnika and Harishchandra Ghats, funeral pyres burn through day and night as families accompany loved ones on their final journey.

Around the flames, prayers are spoken, boats cross the river, merchants work and children play. Life continues within sight of its own ending.

Keta and Varanasi belong to different worlds, yet the photographs reveal a profound connection. Along Ghana's coast, water takes away homes while communities gather the courage to begin again. Beside the Ganges, fire releases the body while the living continue their daily passage.

Together, these photographs invite us to pause before lives that often remain unseen.
